About Shui-lyn White

Shui-lyn White has lived and worked all over the world, from Nigeria where she was born, to England where she studied as well as Australia, Malawi, Ghana, and France before settling in South Africa where she currently has a studios in Cape Town and Porterville.

Born in Nigeria of mixed parentage Shui-lyn has a keen interest in the role of belonging in the development and destruction of the individual and society. Her work seeks to explore and question the constructs of belonging and identity in the formation of the individual – how we get to become who we are.

Despite the violence of the mark making, her works exhibit a stillness of intense presence in the moment, hinting perhaps at the possibility of arriving at a sense of one’s self and one’s place in the world independent of societal mores.

Working mainly in oils and ink monotypes, her semi-abstract images of heads and figures question what is essential to the formation and recognition of the individual even to the point of fragmenting, or dissolving into the background; her images find themselves at the untenable instant where everything is either coming together or breaking apart.

Shui-lyn has exhibited in both solo and group exhibitions in Johannesburg, Cape Town and New York.

At present, she is due to exhibit work by invitation at the Royal Society for Printmakers Masters Exhibition in November this year at The Bankside Gallery in London. In February 2018, she has a solo exhibition at Rust-en-Vrede Gallery in Durbanville exploring Presence and Absence.

Her work can be seen at her studios by appointment and at the Manz Art Gallery in Franschhoek.
